Improving Heavy Construction

Meet Taylor Hendricksen: McCarthy Improvement Intern

In honor of National Intern Day, we chatted with Taylor Hendricksen about his internship experience, what he’s learned so far, and one piece of advice he has for his peers.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Eldridge for the majority of my childhood/adulthood.

What school do you attend?

I attended the North Scott School District K-12.

What is your major?

I am currently studying construction management at the University of Northern Iowa.

How did you learn about this internship?

I learned about this internship from a friend of mine, along with seeing it online.

What drew you to interning at McCarthy Improvement?

The ability to gain knowledge and experience in the field and office was what drew me to McCarthy Improvement.

What has been one of the biggest surprises – good or bad – that you’ve encountered since working here?

The biggest surprise thus far would be how much collaboration and teamwork are involved on any given thing throughout the company, along with the ability to ask anyone for help and they are willing to do so.

How will you take this experience/what you have learned and apply it when going back to school?

I think the biggest thing I can bring back to school would be the real-world knowledge I have gained to help me understand more during school.

Does this internship solidify your degree (ie are you still confident this is the career path you want to follow)?

This internship is just what I was looking for in terms of helping me gain knowledge and showing me what it’s like to be in a position like this.

What piece of advice would you share with your peers about getting an internship?

Make the most of your time with the people you are working with, build relationships, and don’t be afraid to ask any questions you might have. Set goals for what you want to learn and gain from your experience with the company and see if you can fulfill them throughout the internship.
