Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Project: Domestic CV & Taxi Hold Lot Relocation

Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA) initiated a six billion dollar overhaul over a 20-years period. Part of the master plan involved relocating the taxi cab lot to a more suitable location for both domestic terminals. McCarthy and JV partner Technique Concrete Construction spent 13 months transforming the former rental car lot (approximately 18 acres) into a fully functional road system and staging area for the ground transportation personnel.

This Construction Management project contained 11,000 SY of 10” PCC paving, a bridge, a 10,000 SF building (built by sister company Bush Construction), a 100,000-gallon lift station, a 50,000 SF underground water detention system, 25,000 SF of MSE walls and a very large parking lot. Upon completion, this project achieved LEED Gold Certification. McCarthy has performed several civil projects at Hartsfield, from roads to runways, but this was the first cross-over type project with the City of Atlanta.

CSX Winter Haven

The CSX Intermodal Terminals expansion project was born out of the facility growing out of its original design capacity of 300K containers per year. The project included:

  • construction of additional gantry cranes
  • high mast lighting
  • more than 13 acres of additional tractor trailer parking, loading and unloading areas

McCarthy Improvement provided 67,000 SY of concrete. Because the project specifications required a mix capable of attaining a compressive strength of 4,000 psi at 28 days, McCarthy Improvement developed a mixture that met the required strength in less than seven days. As a result, this expedited cure of adjacent paving lanes.

The American Concrete Pavement Association recognized McCarthy Improvement as a gold award winner for this project. Click here to learn more.

Interstate 57 and 70 in Effingham (E-4)

The I-57/70 Expansion and Safety Upgrade project was a multi-phase project that expanded the interchange of Interstate 57 and Interstate 70 through the heart of Effingham, Illinois. This roadway carries an average of 45,400 vehicles everyday with approximately 20,450 of them being trucks. This project included the addition of a third lane in each direction as well as six new bridges, seven bridge rehabilitations, safety upgrades and advanced work zone safety systems that were in place for the duration of the project. A multimodal component of the project involved the construction of a bicycle and pedestrian bridge to connect trails on both sides of the interstate. This project is a critical interstate route for cross-country freight traffic so communication and safety in the work zone included a traffic management system involving changeable message boards to relay information to motorists in the event of backups or delays.

Rhythm City Casino Resort Event Center

The Rhythm City Hotel is a seven-story structure comprised of post-tension concrete decks along with concrete columns and shear walls. This structure is built on auger cast piles as the foundation under all slabs on grade and basement structure. McCarthy Improvement was responsible for the structural build-out. The decks were poured in two sections; an east and a west half with a pour strip in the middle. McCarthy finished its portion of the project with a crew of crafts including operators, finishers, carpenters, ironworkers, and teamsters.

The finished structure was left ready for the finishing touches of interior decorating by others. This project was part of a new casino/events center with an attached hotel near Interstate 74 & 80 in Davenport, Iowa. The total project covered 285,000 sq. ft. consisting of the hotel, gaming floor, events center, and other related facilities.

Project Facts

  • 352 Tons of steel & cables were used on the hotel
  • 5000 CY of concrete were used on the hotel
  • Hotel basement sits on a ten-foot thick pile cap
  • Project was completed on time despite extreme rainfall

FAP 595 (John Deere Road) Widening & Reconstruction

The John Deere Road project in Moline Illinois was a 2.51 mile remove and replacement of one of the busiest pieces of roadway in the Quad City area. With high traffic counts, 4 intersections, and hundreds of businesses and residences, this project affected almost every person in the Quad City area. The existing 4 lane roadway was removed and expanded to a 6-lane road with double left turn lanes at every intersection. This project had 5 road shutdowns all with penalties associated with late completion however, each shut down was completed ahead of schedule.

Beyond the roadway work, there was also several other disciplines of work that McCarthy Improvement self-performed. Over three miles of pipe was laid, 340 drainage structures were installed, and seven box culverts were removed and replaced. McCarthy Improvement also built four cast-in-place retaining walls and 2 precast noise walls along the John Deere Road corridor. Each intersection received brand new traffic signals and detection cameras with connected traffic management software to optimize travel in the new stretch of roadway.
